Fasting, Faith and Believing

I know there are various views as to why we fast. Fasting from food is a very powerful spiritual practice. It’s used by many religions, not just Christians, but the reason for it  varies tremendously. Most people think fasting is to impress God or something.  It’s really all about getting control over your body and soul. We are supposed to make our flesh submit to our spirit. The spirit and mind should tell the body what to do. Most people listen to their bodies and obey its demands. Hunger, thirst, pain and emotions are loud and we tend to give in to whatever the body says. Our soul and body are carnally-minded and they will lead you to death if you let them. Romans 8:6 “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”   Our spirit-man is the one who has the mind of Christ. (1 Cor 2:6) The spirit gains control, as it should, when the flesh is subdued.

How does fasting increase your faith? In manifesting healing and supernatural changes, you must practice faith-control over your body daily. Medicine is temporary and weak but your faith will keep you in good health and provide raising-from-the-dead miracles if you practice. During a fast from food, your body begins to talk to you. Headache, fatigue, dizziness, crabbiness  and more will usually start when you deny your body and soulish (or fleshly) self. You have the ability to tell your body to be quiet and perk up. You can tell the headache to stop and it will. You can tell fatigue to go and it will. When you practice by fasting, you can gain confidence in faith that you can believe for greater things than these. Burns will heal immediately if you tell them to. Cuts, colds, flu, viruses, allergies! Resist and they will flee. Migraines, fevers, even mole and wart removal by faith! Cancer dies when you tell it to die. One thing is required: you must believe. In Mark 9:23  Jesus said, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes.” He tells us how to use our faith in Mark 11:23: “I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.”

Jesus explained the value of prayer and fasting to the disciples in Mark Ch 9:29 “Why could not we cast him out? And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.” The  usual thoughts on this verse are that the stronger demons won’t listen unless we have “fasted up;” however, I believe that our confidence is built up as we regularly fast to practice overcoming the natural realm through faith. Jesus spoke to the fig tree and cursed it. Then He explained how to use your faith in Mark 11:23 For verily I say unto you, that whosoever shall say unto this mountain, ‘Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea,’ and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass, he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24 Therefore I say unto you, what things so ever ye desire when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

So how do I believe? Practice your faith daily. Speak to things, especially your body. Once a week, use fasting to cause your body to submit. If you merely suffer without telling your body “no” when it rebels, it’s not as effective. As you see your body respond to you, your faith and confidence will increase. When I fast, my goal is to not allow any suffering but resist headaches, fatigue and weariness. I feel super-charged, victorious and full of spiritual downloads from God. Fasting should be a positive experience.

1 Cor 9:27 “But I keep control of my body, and bring it into subjection, lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”
